Fulling mill (site) - NT 8655 1097
The site of 13th century fulling mill, fulling being part of the cloth production process. Excavation between 2011 and 2014 revealed the pit (shown) which had held a mill wheel with a diameter of 11 feet. This would have driven machinery on the bank that pounded the new cloth in a liquid that removed grease and tightened the fabric. This may have been carried out in the open air rather than a building. There were other structures in the river as well, possibly related to the washing of cloth and the delivery of water to the wheel.
